    Speedo + Odometer no workie

Ever since I bought my car neither has worked. Every once and awhile (has happend maybe 3 times) my speedo needle will jump up for a second and than fall down while driving. also, if I hit the dash board hard enough the speedo needle will jump up for a split second to the mph I am driving but than fall down immediately.

I took out the cluster once and removed the backing but everything LOOKED to be in order.. The gears didn't seem to be stripped on the speedo/odo..

So is it just a bad connection somewhere?

Try swapping in a known working cluster and see if the problem persists. I'm going to say it's probably just the cluster. You can check the speed sensor on the back side of the differential also. Sometimes those wires get chewed or just over time corrode.

      Good luck.

anyother advice? I would like to maintain the original cluster if possible.. What should I look for relating to the speedo not working? The speed sensor on the differential looks fine. I took it out and cleaned it as well..

Did I mention the RPM gauge DOES work?

        thanks guys.

i had the same problem and I found that it was a bad connection on the C2 connector. take it apart and see if any of the pins in there are out of place. In my case i had to take a couple of the independant wires out and rebend (gently) the pin tabs and make sure it clicked back into place. put back together and put on a new zip tie and you should be good.

where is the C2 connector located?

well I guess you are reffering to the plug on the right?

So just unplug it and make sure the pins on the outside are all straight?

Had the same problem with my 84 eta. Took apart cluster and cleaned the pins to the Speedo on the other side of the cluster(in reference to the pic you posted) helped for about a week. Then the needle floating happened again. Was too annoyed with all the cluster removal practice I was getting. Also read that perhaps the circuit board may develop cracks and resoldering would return function.

Ultimately just started driving my 91 and sold the 84.

Are you sure the problem is in the cluster? I had an intermittent speedo/odo problem and it was the wires to the sensor connector that were bad.

were exactly do the wires run? I tried following them from the sensor on the diff. but didn't get to far... :-?

not the C2 connector shown, but the female piece attached to its harness, which plugs into the shown piece. and yes, resflowing solder on the board should be looked into also.
