After my car was totaled last week, I'm now moving onto an e36 and have no more need for an S50. The car runs great and has been my daily driver for the last year. I will run the compression tests next week, but the car has done great on mileage averaging 27mpg on my commute for the last 6 months (actual recording with paper to prove). Doesn't burn any oil and idles strong. It's still in the car and this weekend will be able to be heard running before I pull it from the car. I don't have access to the car before Friday, but will be around all weekend if anyone wants to come see it run.
Here is a video of the first startup in 5 days. Also, a video of the car running from in the engine bay.
Compression numbers on a cold motor (sitting for 5 days) are:
cylinder 1:180
cylinder 2: 186
cylinder 3: 195
cylinder 4: 179
cylinder 5:177
cylinder 6: 175
S50B30
- Replaced headgasket and updated valve guides (Pre-9/94 engine)
- Replaced valve cover gasket 20,000 miles ago
- Replaced coil caps 20,000 miles ago
- Only use Rotella 10-30 conventional on the motor since I’ve owned it 22,000 miles ago
- Running a 3” MAF with a silver label ECU
- Stock tune running EWS delete
- 525i wiring harness with the engine harness pins adapted to fit the 1986 325e wiring (no adapter, harness plugs right into e30 c101)
- 525i Oilpan with a welded oil pump nut (reported from previous owner, I haven’t had the engine out of the car but never had any issues)
- Complete cooling system overhaul 15,000 miles ago
- New stock waterpump with metal impeller
- 80 degree thermostat
- Metal thermostat housing
- New coolant lines all the way back to the heater core (every coolant line has been replaced)
- Z3M S54 3 Core Radiator
- Installed Spal 16” electric fan 300 miles ago
- Used a Spal electric fan relay kit rather than using factory wiring
o Comes on and turns off all independently without having to press any buttons
Exhaust
- I have been running the headers installed by previous owner. They can be included however they don’t fit well at all, I had a replacement set of Raceland headers which I was going to install next weekend actually
o The raceland headers won’t be included since they are going to be installed on my new car
ZF310 Transmission
- Runs good, fluid could use a change though since it has been since I bought the car
- When moving over 5mph and downshifting into first with the clutch in it grinds, but no whining or other defects.
- Clutch was replaced by previous owner so it should have life left
o If I were keeping it, I would upgrade to a JB Racing flywheel with a new clutch while it’s out of the car
- Stock M3 Shifter
- Driveline is included, CSB is in good shape and hasn’t made any noise
o 4 bolt rear driveshaft to mate with an e30 diff
o I was using a 2.93LSD and getting between 26 and 27mpg while commuting mostly rural highway from Everett, WA to Duvall, WA
ยง I also have a book which I put any maintenance performed and at what mileage, as well as every fill up and how many gallons/ trip odometer/ and odometer
I received the car back this morning so if anyone is interested in seeing it running, you're more than welcome to it, I'll be pulling the motor this saturday afternoon or sunday morning so please let me know if you're interested in viewing the engine running before then, or I can hold off as needed. Also, I will get a video and compression numbers this week.

Those are the highlights, but I'll have everything to make the car run aside from exhaust. I no longer have a need for any of it, so I plan to include the entire system all the way back to the diff.
