24v (s50) head removal

I am removing my head on my s50, and when i try to lock the camshafts, ons side does not sit parallel to the head. crank is locked, and i tried to rotate it a tad with a 24mm wrench. no use.

any ideas on what to do before i proceed?

You don't need to use the locking tool to remove them. A friend holding a wrench on them while you undo the cap bolts is enough.

sorry this is my first experience, trying to go off the bently manual. would that effect timing by not using the locking tool? and by cap bolts you mean head bolts?

No, removing the cams will affect timing though...haha


taking it all apart is pretty straight forward. Best advice I can give is to be very careful when loosening the nuts on the bearing caps. Follow the pattern and back each nut off a little at a time to prevent snapping the cam.

I got to where you have to lift the head off the block. Only thing is that one side of the head doesnt want to lift up (vanos side). While the other side of the head lifts up. I have been following Bentley e36 during this process. Any ideas on what to do?

Have you removed all four e-torx bolts on the VANOS side of the engine?

i got the 2 torx that go to the timing cover, ill just double check tomorrow.
