I just did this yesterday...X5s are extremely fun cars to autocross. Also got to autocross the Lexus, Volvo, and Mercedes equivalents. They set it up so you auto-x a BMW, then a competitor, BMW, competitor, BMW, competitor, so you get 6 runs through the auto-x, 2 laps each. SOOOOO much fun, especially considering that it's free! I was lucky enough to get to run two autocross sessions since there were openings in the later session. But wait...the best is yet to come:

Got to rally the 335 and the 550 w/ my friend in the passenger seat and no rep or instructor on a 10 mile stretch of road in Auburn. Lots of straights, banked turns and hills, and to my avail, no cops!! We were even lucky enough to go on a third test drive in separate cars, so I raced him in the 335 while he drove the 550. Hit 120 MPH on highway 167, hearing the lovely hiss of the turbos between each paddle shift. Could have gone so much faster, but just had to slow down. You guys absolutely must do this!!! I should point out that one cocky driver in a riced out early 90's accord attempted to race me on the freeway on ramp...sorry buddy, no contest.

One downside: when you register, and you indicate what type of BMW you own, the earliest year is 1992, everything else is labeled as "older." Where's the E30 love??

          Bumpety bump.

SoCal people get to register tomorrow for this...

Do they have auto-x stuff at each place? Or do they just let you go on the streets?

Any folks on the west coast do this. I did in Bend and Medford couple weeks ago. It was amazing. Got some pics and video if anybody is interested.

            Cheers.

Sorry folks, just found my answer in another thread.

I just participated in the ultimate drive. it was a blast! as soon as i got there they asked what car i wanted to drive. there was an age limit of 25 for the 335's,high end 5's,6's and 7's but after my first car a z4 3.0i one of the reps said fuck it you can drive the 335i convertible. i took it to like 100 on the freeway entrance and the check engine lite came on and it was overheating. I guess It was tired from people redlining it all day.The next car I was going to drive was the extremely luxurious 750il. I got in and sat there for a minute trying to figure out how to put in drive. when i finally figured it out. the e brake was on then out of the corner of my eye i saw something that made my heart race. Was it, could it be, no,no it wasn't an m5 but it was a 550i with a 4.8L v8 pumping out 360hp/360ftlbs torque this thing was just that a thing a beautiful for a lake of better words thing.I pulled up next to a Chrysler 300srt8 looked at him and floored it he didn't even know we where racing. 80,90,100,110,120 by the time the heads up display on the windshield caught up with my awesome speed i was cruising at 140 and when i say cruising i mean floating along effortlessly I love this car it was like a poor mans m5. If you don't think you want to go take my word it was the funnest thing I've done in a while and its all for a great cause so get the day of and do it
