Damn...I can't wait to build a gaming rig... My i7 DV6 only barely cuts it for gaming...

My key to being able to build gaming computers is generally to do things in small steps, and I never purchase top tier components instead going for the mid-high level stuff.

When I had the choice between the first intel quad cores and the core2, I picked the e8400 and overclocked the piss out of it.
When choosing a videocard, I set my budget around $250 and only run a single card
I bought a 4GB ram kit at first, and upgraded down the road when prices dropped.

If you want to build a half decent computer start with it just like a car project
1: what do you want it to do? (games? if so which ones? monitor size, movies, noise levels, power usage, etc)
        2: budget?
        3: fanboy considerations (brands etc)

I built this (two years ago) so that I wouldn't have to touch it for a good five years.

                      i7 950
                      6GB OCZ DDR3
                      gigabyte ga-x58a-ud3r
                      850w cooler master PS
                      2x ATi 5870 1GB
                      2x 1TB drives
                      coolermaster case and cpu cooler
                      BD drive
                      logitech z-560 speakers
                      generic dell keyboard/mouse
                      2x 2709w 27" Dell monitors

eventually I'll add a sound card, on board sound "quality" has been bugging me. Some parts were acquired over multiple computers (monitors, speakers, input stuff, etc).

Holy shit there's some serious set ups on here. Of course I didn't know shit about computers when I bought mine at Costco in 2009. Had I done my due diligence I would have spent my $1,000 building one.

                                Costco Hewlett Packard "Bundle"
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
                                CPU: AMD Phenom x4 830
                                P/S: OCZ 1000w fully-modular (It came with a 250w!)
                                Ram: 8GB Dual-Channel DDR3
Graphics: XFX AMD Radeon HD 6770 (Cheap upgrade when Diablo 3 came out)
                                HD: 1TB integrated, 2TB external
Monitor: 27" LED Samsung w/ built in audio (Big difference than the 20" (+/-) 1600x900 it came with)

I have a GFG 46" Samsung TV, so my desktop is only used for surfing and this. I'm definitely satisfied with it for it's minimal use. I don't really game anymore, I logged like 120 hours on D3 and decided to return to life lol.

I also have my 32GB iPad 3 courtesy of BLACKOUT for portability. It's nice when working on my car in the garage, I don't need to run upstairs to my PC to look something up. Also nice for browsing on the couch, in bed, useful in class, etc. I'm a fan of tablets regardless of other's opinions.
