E34 530 to 540/5 project in Jakarta Indonesia

In 2013 I bought an Indonesian assembled (German manufactured CKD kit) 1995 530i 5 speed manual to take the daily driver duties off my E34 M5 (which doesn't like being stuck in Jakarta traffic jams)

I bought the 530 with 154k kms and have just installed an M60B40 at 183.5 k kms due to nikasil cracks on cylinder 7 on the M60B30.

    Mods are

    1. M60B40 using 530 flywheel and 5 speed manual

    2. Custom cooling system using a aluminum radiator and electric puller fan (no more fan clutch problems or explosions)

    3. Custom 4" Nascar style Y pipe system with custom rear muffler.

    4. E34 M5 brakes and calipers

    5. 18" wheels with Toyo T1Sport 235 and 255

I would say while the M5 is fast the 540 is 'quick' , it's a bit softer than the M5 but this engine is a lot happier sitting at idle in traffic compared to the S38.

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

Here's the 530 taking on a friends M5 before the engine swap

    Next projects are

    1. Try to dial in the tune a bit better with a WAR chip

    2. Cold air intake

    continued

    Some background on this M60B40

It's a $1,000 junkyard engine and has been sitting for at least 3 to 5 years and although it's not using oil it is down on compression (should be 210 psi)

    C1 160psi
    C2 170psi
    C3 170psi
    C4 170psi
    C5 160psi
    C6 150psi*
    C7 150psi*
    C8 160psi

    * cylinder 6 and 7 seem to drop quicker than the others , this happened on my B30 also.

The M60B40 is putting out 25% more power than the B30 which measured 166.5 RWHP on this dyno

I think this graph is interesting as the M60B40 usually has peak power at 5,800 but in this case it's still producing power up to redline

Peak torque has dropped from 4,500 rpm stock to 4,400 rpm

I put these changes down to the custom exhaust.

I upgraded the pipes into my custom expansion chambers

The 4 x 40mm dia pipes must have been glowing red hot at high rpm (700 deg C plus)

The new pipes are 4 x 60mm ID 316 stainless steel and discoloration showing temps around 400 deg C now
