    need some help/advice....on Shifter arm

    i got a 1984 bmw 318i and yesterday my shifter arm broke......so me and my friends went under checked everything out and fixed the problem temporarily atleast thats what were calling our job a temporary fix

    but i wanted to know if i could get rid of or replace the shifter arm with something better... i havent found anything yet

    I hope you mean #6 in that link as #5 is the stamped metal housing. That's an early model and I'm not aware of any options. For the later models there is a double shear link. But the whole assembly is different. If you search on shift linkage rebuild you will find a lot of threads on both early and late models and will give you an idea of the differences.

    Are you sure the link arm is bad and not just the common worn bushings? I recently rebuilt mine and its a rather tedious process on jack stands in the garage.

      I just replaced a fractured shift arm so it's possible. I did go with a dssr from garagistic and it's definitely a significant improvement. You'll need the late model shifter joint (that mount to the trans) and check whether you have a 180 or 187mm shifter arm.
