    Over heating. Radiator cold.

Hi. my car has been overheating and today I warmed it to 212f and
both cold/hot side hoses where rock hard. Cold side was also ambient.
There was no flow going through it.

The radiator plastic end tanks started to leak because of the pressure.
    What could be wrong?

The system is not bled correctly.

You could have an air lock around the thermostat or the t-stat may have failed. The water pump might have failed. What engine do you have? If you have a transplanted engine from a later car you might have the infamous Plastic Water Pump Impeller.

I have had similar symptoms in the past. Improperly bled coolant system was my culprit.

Follow JLevie's coolant bleeding procedure in the DIY section of this forum.

          How old is the radiator?

I have to tell you. Over time (10 years), these things might get clogged etc and just replacing them is good preventive maintenance. No, try to bleed things first to address the issue but I remember in my 318i.....when the radiator sprung a leak....the temps after changing it were amazing. I never knew how much a difference it made.

Hard hoses when the engine is hot is a sign that there is a significant amount of air in the cooling system. Unless there was recent cooling system work with improper bleeding the air is from a leaking head gasket.

The cold hoses and radiator could be caused by a bad thermostat, bad water pump, or clogged radiator.

I'd start by replacing the thermostat and bleeding the system. If the hoses get hard a bleed will release a good bit of air, which indicates a failed head gasket.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Ok guys thanks for the ideas.

It was completely burped, but actually, I installed the thermostat reversed. :-0
creating almost a zero flow situation.

Thanks for thinking this out with me. Big help.

looks like you've got a ton of rtv on that joint. You shouldn't need anything more than a new O ring to seal that

rtv isn't hurting anything. I put less this time.

                    kinda interesting.
Maybe not, but bottom green line is temp
you see it go to 195f where it opens up and drops to 190 then just evens itself to 195 again slightly dipping.
I'm thinking those dips are when the thermostat is opening up. Then it goes to 185 when the fan turns on. thermo is a 80c/176f

Ahh, something is wrong and my first suspicion would be a bad thermostat. The temps should bounce around 80C, going a bit higher under heavy load.

Until a loose bit clogs a passage and causes damage. Your car, but its useless at the tstat
