I guess it is a unicorn, certainly rarer than most of the M3 special editions as well. They were assembled as CKD (complete Knock Down) kits in South Africa, BMW still pressed the unibody's together in Germany, so perhaps the no ski-pass is for chassis strength.
Also has a long range fuel tank behind the rear seat, but I've seen plenty of E30's with the tank from factory with the cutout for the ski-pass. The mystery continues.
