Coil may be bad...worth an upgrade?

So, I've been having some acceleration issues at full throttle. Occurs between 5 and 6 grand, constantly. Almost like "half" a rev-limiter is there.

I tested resistance in my coil, and the secondary I believe had higher resistance than it should have had. Could this be a cause for concern?

Now, my next question - is it worth upgrade to, say a MSD Blaster coil? Or, will a new stock coil work just fine?

I'm hoping this is the cause of my problems. I've put in new spark plugs and checked all other ignition components and they are perfectly fine!

i just replaced my coil with an MSD blaster2 a few weeks ago. (p/n 8203)

i don't think it's much of an upgrade over new OE, but its lightyears ahead of my busted old one. It also probably handles repeat-firing at 7k RPM better than OE.

    plus it was less expensive.

And that hooks right up, no modifcation to the wires needed?

      Looks like it's cheaper too.

yessir, that part number connected right to the stock wiring with no issues.

i also bought the MSD bracket to mount it, my old OE coil bracket got ripped off the fender. I suppose i could have remounted the old one, but this one was shiny and 5 bucks. :p

Before you go wild with the coil, connect a 0-50psi gauge at the fuel rail and see what the pressure is doing at WOT and high rpm. What you've described sounds exactly like fuel starvation under high flow requirements. That can be from a weak pump, or on a car of this age, from rust in the tank partially choking off flow into the pump.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

If you get the MSD coil you need the matching bracket. It won't fit in the stock one.

You really think so? I mean...it came out of no where. AND, if I let the pedal up just a TAD from the floor, I get no "lag". And really, the best way to describe is it to say it's like an early revlimiter.

Basically what occurs is, if I'm at full throttle, multiple times between 5 and 6 the revs will bounce, as if it's hitting a revlimiter, but if you keep your foot to the floor, it will keep going.

It really FEELS ignition related to me. But I really have no for sure way to test.

I may just wait till next weekend for the SoCal meet in Pasedena and see if anyone else has any ideas after goin for a quick ride. :)

A great suggestion nonetheless. Given the fact that I still wanted an AFPR with a guage, this is probably a good route to go either way. And, you're talkin a guage in the engine bay, or bringing a guage into the car, so I can monitor it?

                Thanks for the pointer, Matt!
