    Ignition Coil and wire corrosion

    Hey guys,

Car wouldn't start up after getting gas today. Sounded the same as when I've had dirt and crap get on the coil and cause it to arc. I pulled off the rubber hat from the coil and found that the end of the wire from the distributor had really corroded along with the top of the ignition coil itself - all black and carbon-y.

I was able to stick them back together with some duct tape and was able to continue driving to work.

BTW - What would cause this??? I've had my E30 for over 4 years and never seen this.

Tried calling around if I could get a single ignition wire somewhere... no go - only sold in sets, and its late to be calling wreckers. All the other wires are fine except the coil end of the coil-to-distributor wire. I have my old coil, which was still working when I replaced it, as a spare.

Question, if I hit up a wrecker, would any wire that would fit the distributor and coil do? I'm seriously short of cash and need to fix this as cheaply as possible at the moment.

What other BMW models could I hit up for a single wire that would work in a pinch - E30s are rare wrecker finds in Ontario these days. Would anything else European (or otherwise) that were still coil/distributor be able to supply a suitable wire if I can't source something BMW?

So basically, something like that should be pretty generic?

I don't have a broad range of knowledge of ignition systems, so pardon any ignorance. ;)

This won't help you at all, but the major car parts shops here in Australia all sell spark plug leads individually, I've used them a few times when mixing and matching ignition parts on other cars. You can still buy sets of course.

Surprises me that the same isn't the case in Canada.

And yeah, generic part. Just needs to be approximately the same length and same size ends.

For the most part, yes. Remember this though, those little terminal nipple things on e30 plugs are not on, you just have the threaded part. So, where it connects to the plug, just make sure its for that type of setup. You should feel it repeatedly "click" as its sliding over the threads of the spark plug terminal.

Thanks for the advice guys... yeah I figured the ends would have to be the same as the ones I got so that they fit.

IIRC carbon build-up is an indication of arcing. You need to make sure the terminal is fully seated into the coil and that its a tight fit diametrically.

I have a spare coil wire that you can have for the shipping cost, if you want it.

                Hey VP,

Thanks for the input. That coil has been in for a couple of years and have had no issues. I'll post pics when I get a chance.

Thanks for the coil offer, I do have my last coil in my spare parts bin. When I replaced it, I was being preventative, so it'll still be good until I can get some geld for a new one. Much appreciated though!

My bad. I haven't had the chance to look for one today, but if I have problems, I'll keep you in mind!

                    Thanks!

When I lived in Vancouver I went to Acklands (not sure if they are still around) and bought a spool of ignition wire, rubber boots and terminal connectors for both ends. Made my own wires the same way we now change timing belts whenever we get a new e30. I think I paid $20 for all of it and am sure I made at least half dozen sets of wires. :)

Every parts place I called only sells the wires in full sets. I think you can order your own stuff online, like Jeff suggests though. Saw some some stuff in searching last night that suggested that.

Do you have O'Reilly autopart up there? They sell single wire.

I just realized I have an open set at home and may still have the coil wire. PM me Thursday and remind me to check.
