    excessive clacking/ticking

i know m20's are ticky bastards butttt.... this seems a bit much.

I CHECKED THE VALVE CLEARANCES and they all seem exactly to spec. Car isnt blowing any smoke, and no check engine light.. what else would be causing this racket?

    heres a close up..

Valve clearances are to spec..Whats going on here?

    and here's about 10 feet away..sounding like a WW2 jeep

what should i look into first??

    thanks

Perhaps a crack in the factory exhaust manifolds? Exhaust leaks will often sound very clackety.

What did you set the valve clearances to? How did you set them?

What did you set your valve clearances too? and what is your method?

I found the m20 clearances a pain to adjust compared to other engines. took me quite a few goes to get the hang of it. Very easy to think you have it right, then you tighten it up and its too damn loose when you check it again.

Did you use the spring tool when you adjusted the clearance?

that thing worth while? wonder if its any different to just attaching a spring on the end of an allen key.

I would take a look on your rockers. and adjust the valves one more time.
remember to adjust on valve stem.

ive ones had a friend sounding like that. Rockerarm on cyl 6 on exhaust snapped.

almost seems like the frequency is too low to be valves, sounds like something happening once per rpm like a fan hitting the shroud etc hopefully not something worse

                  I was thinking Cummins....

Yeah, that ain't right. All I got is to try the mechanic's stethoscope,
and see if you can figure out where it's coming from.

                  Sticking valve?
It doesn't get nastier with a throttle snap- open, so it might not
                  be piston or rod... but...

It sounds like the land cruiser after it wiped a cam lobe-
                  but that's a cam-in-block engine....
