    name this wire

when taking apart my car for a new head gasket, I found this wire that looks to be cut and dangling loose in my engine bay. I don't know what it is - any help?

The cut end doesn't show any exposed wires (weird):

And also, how are these vacuum line elbows supposed to stay attached to the throttle body? They seem very loose and easy to detach:

Is the wire part of the bundle that runs to the oil pressure switch? An early design used a two wire sensor and later production only needed a single wire. BMW just cut the wire on later production cars.

Those fittings were knurled and pressed in to the throttle body. Over time a bit of wear occurs and they'll loosen and not stay in. Clean the bore and nipple well with acetone and use a bit of JB Weld to fix them in place.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

The wire goes to the sensor on the #6 spark plug wire.

      Jb weld.

they may seem lose and easy to disconnect, but they are part of a vacuum which when you start the car, those fittings become very tight and secure.

will a new set of spark plug wires come with this piece intact and allow me to fix the situation?

also, the car was running great for the 8 months before I found this disconnected. What does it do and why does the car run fine without it connected?

sorry to be so ignorant/ lazy

thanks to anyone willing to enlighten me.

It's for injector timing. Can't quote Bentley off the top of my head but review the timing belt changing procedure and it mentions it.

But its batch fire, i dont see why it could control injector timing.

A new set of factory plug wires will come with this sensor.

The wire is an impulse sensor, your car is not running fine, it is running crappy! from idle, blip the throttle a bit, your engine will stutter and fall on its face before revving up. You could try just stripping the wires and solder them up. Then make sure you don't let the wire get cut by the water pump pulley again.

Those fittings you can just glue in place, but new ones fit tightly enough that none is required ;)
