IF YOUR OIL PAN BREAKS, STOP DRIVING!

I got a slammed 99 civic for a grand because the motor was blown. How did it blow? There are a couple theories, but my leading one is that the car was soooo low (I took the bumpers and sideskirts off and STILL couldn't fit a jack underneath). I think the kid hit something (oil pan was busted into a millioin pieces) and kept driving. If you hit something, and oil comes out, STOP DRIVING. The motor may still be salvageable.

Better to pay for a tow and an oil pan that for a whole new m20.

Hence why I cary towing insurance on the e30's. I've never had to use it for oil pans but instead for the stupid M30 overheating  Dang I miss the motor. The eta has a good bit of torque but dosn't have the HP of the M30 to back it up.

Ditto. My insurance is through Progressive, but I have AAA Plus Roadside Service. It sets me back ~$75/year but I think the piece of mind is worth the price. Luckily I haven't had to call upon this service for a while. Last time I did was when I holded an M20 oilpan when I was over 60 miles from home. This plan I have covers towing at no charge up to 100 miles. Had I paid for that tow out of my pocket it would've exceeded $250. That's over 3 years of coverage. Like I said, its worth it.

I've been through this situation before. Cracked the oil pan, didn't see any leaks. Drove home and a puddle formed under the car the next morning. Needless to say I replaced it and I'm now overly cautious when driving in areas I don't know well.

Do you mean to tell me that it never occurred to some of you guys that if you hit your oil pan on something while driving, the first thing you should do is pull over and turn off the engine?

It amazes me how some people call themselves car enthusiasts these days.

haha funny post in light of recent oil pan incidents. i still blame fucking caltrans for leaving peices of shit on freeways. i think the reason people drive is because they haven't noticed that their oil pan is damaged. none the less you hit an obstacle its best to pull over and check.

if you hit a cinder block, and didn't notice you shouldn't be driving and should allow someone to check under the car for missing children and animals.

I thought the oil was just ornamental. I guess you learn something new everyday.

I was always told that you wanted to keep the enigine running tht way it would keep oil flowing through the engine so that it wouldn't spill out.

Theres a write up somewhere for fitting the ding noise to the oil pressure light for e36. So when u dont have oil pressure the car will make noise and if you dont see the ligt u will be saved. Its probably not nessary but i hope to figure out how to do this on my e30.

and when ur pressure light comes on push in the clutch then turn off the key as fast as you can, then pull over
