you think thats weird? i drove a tractor over the fall that had reverse in the uper left, first in the lower left, 4th in the upper middle, nothing in the lower middle, 2nd in the upper right, and 3rd in the lower right... notice that the tractor transmission was still race inspired.
    Hah. Try this shift pattern.

Reverse is up and forward, 3rd is up and backwards
4th is down and forwards, 5th is down and backwards
1st is middle and forwards, 2nd is middle and backwards.

    Or wait, it might be

Reverse is up and forward, 3rd is up and backwards
5th is down and forwards, 4th is down and backwards
2nd is middle and forwards, 1st is middle and backwards.

Neutral is when the lever moves up and down freely.

No synchro's either, and a governor, not a throttle, so it's very rewarding when you figure out how to shift without stopping.

Wouldn't be that hard to get used to if you drove it around for an hour or so. I doubt I'd get confused driving a dogleg, just keep the shift pattern in mind until you're used to it.

I would have hated to have my first experience with a manual transmission with that shift pattern.

My first crappy ass datsun 310 had a dogleg tranny. That piece of siht definately was NOT race inspired. No syncro into reverse either. POS

Except the lever doesn't move normally, it moves up and down. No shift boot. No ball pivot in the middle. It'd be like shifting holding on to the lever that is part of the transmission (only vertically, not horizontally), without the external linkage.
