    My M30 rebuild.

    Hello.
I'm sorta going in this blind not having done this before
or even know wtf I'm doing.

Any opinions or help is appreciated.
    Does this look ok?

Supposedly honing is just for deglazing so I think it looks deglazed?
again, I have no idea. Just went up and down with the hone tool real fast.

So what I'm actually doing is called de-glazing.
Everyone calls it honing, but it's not actually.
The goal is to get all the brown glaze shit off.

A good tip for using one of these things is get the 45*
by looking at the wake the stones leave in the oil
and adjust the drill speed and arm speed to eyeball that 45*

It takes a long ass time to get that brown glaze off btw.
    Hope this helps future people.

Dang, so I can't really continue at the moment.

The block has 91.97 pistons and I was going to use this extra piston
          which I now see it's a 91.98. ...So I can't find the 91.97 I took apart.

            Cleaning pistions.
Autozone has rental tool that helps.

Use a bent piston ring to scrap the carbon.
Like your shaving your face. it'll flake right off.

I used seafoam at first but it really didn't do anything.

I believe KAmotors soaked the pistons in a solvant to clean them. It worked really well. I am not sure what he soaked them in youd have to ask him.

I've always used a scotch brite pad and some brake parts cleaner to clean my Pistons.

Cleaning bores after deglazing is extremely important.

I was told to just scrub it out with soapy water.
                        *Do not do this.*
It does almost nothing. It's good at degreasing but does nothing
for lifting particles out of every micro scratch.

Best way I figure is to wipe it out with ATF.
Wipe it out with ATF, Brake cleaner. ATF again ect..
                        until the towel is clean.

At first I scrubbed it with soapy water and a nylon brush.
                        then brake cleaner
but when I wiped it down with ATF the towel was coming out dirty still.

So I figure the ATF is doing a great job of lifting the grit out of the scratches by itself.

                        1st wipe. 2nd wipe. 3rd wipe.
This is after scrubbing with soapy water. It does nothing really.. For real.

The deglazing tool is from autozone. Free rental.

It kinda sucks that goatse uses the one piece oil ring, but whatever.
next time I'll get a better set.

For me, this is the best way to keep the rings from moving while tightening the tool.
Ring gap ended up at 24 top and 26 second.
