    Escort X50 detector

I recently had the opportunity to test out the Escort X50 radar detector. To briefly summarize my experience with radar detectors, I currently own a Valentine 1, which I've had for about 5 months now. Previous to that, I had a Bel, which at the time I bought it (1997), was top of the line.

My friend had just purchased the X50 and I offered to swap for a week and see how the other liked the other detector. My first impression of it was that it does not look like a $300 radar detector. Very plain jane, and has very few functions. Display was equivalent to that of my 1997 Bel.

Mounting hardware and such are no different from any other detector on the market, although it did have a handy remote mute button located on the cigarette lighter plug. Although the mute button was hardly ever needed because (1) I didn't know it was going off, the alert sounds of this thing sounded more like music on the radio, or my cell phone; or (2) because the thing just wasn't picking anything up!

The X50 is so desensitized that it rarely picked anything up, even on the most sensitive level (Highway). My V1 picks up a lot of garbage, but I can at least desensitize it if I really wanted to. Picking up the garbage let's me know it's doing its job. When the X50 did go off, it pretty much went nuts almost immediately, leaving me twisting my head in all directions trying to find the bogey.

I'll summarize with the X50 may be good for some people who live in downtown metro areas where they will never escape radar garbage...but really in my experience, detectors are not of much use in the city anyway.

    I'll stick to my V1.

i was pleasantly surprised by my v1 last week when it alerted an actual laser trap. it usually goes crazy for neon third brake lights but lo and behold, there were two motor units sitting on the street with a handheld lidar gun. yay v1.

I have an 8500 x50 and it works awesome. Has great detection and nifty features, out of the box. I think you just had the sensetivity turned way down in the programming options.
