    Where does the cable run?

I've heard that the area where the battery is supposed to go is too small in the early 318s to fit a battery back there.

Pasenger side in the Slot where the other wires run, I did the conversion to my 85 318i and the 84 318i. 84 had the narrow slot and I ended up mounting the battery in the spair tire well. Measure the width of your opening there in the rear Passenger of the trunk and I'll let you know if it fits.

You could always get a battery box from Kragen or Auto Zone and mount the battery in the rear right corner of the trunk if your car has the small opening

That's true but then it sits higher up. I don't have the 84 anymore and it worked so I left it as is.

Or you could always run a smaller battery. :)

Aside from looks it also improves the weight distribution of the car.

It would still be lower than the tray in the engine bay.

For the early U.S. 318i, the ETK shows manufacturing date of 9/84 for the change to the battery-sized opening in the trunk.
My first 318i (9/84) had the battery-sized opening. My current 318i (12/83) does not.
