Would an M20 exhaust system from an '88 325i vert fit and work okay in my '91 318i vert m42 engine, with some modifications? I'm talking complete system from the header to the tailpipe, including resonator, catalytic converter and muffler. My recently purchased 318i currently has a performance muffler and straight pipe from the header and it's just too loud for me. What kind of mods would I need? I'm a newbie so please pardon my ignorance.

325i has dual pipes where as 318 has single, so you would need a Y welded on to make things work. It could be done, but you might be better off just going aftermarket. Buy a high flow cat and a muffler and have them welded in. Dynomax Super Turbo is a popular one for the M42. Check out Youtube for sound clips:
