    Straight pipe to Stromung Cat-back?

So I recently discovered that I have a hole smack dab in the middle of my stock catalytic converter. After searching the forums for options, I've came up with several options:

-OE replacement catalytic converter (full piping from manifold to cat ex: DEC brand)
    -high flow cat
-OE non-high flow replacement (cat only ex: Magnaflow #36008)
    -straight pipes

The full OE replacement cats are expensive, and I've only read bad things about the non-highflow cat-only replacements.

My only issue with the high flow cats is that all of the ones I find are single-in/single-out or dual-in/single out. I noticed that everyone likes to run Magnaflow brand ones. I'm not too fond of those designs, since the m20 system is a dual pipe system.

So my question is, how well would straight pipes into a Stromung exhaust work? Will the loss of back pressure affect the car's power significantly?

I understand the legal complications. Luckily, NJ stopped emissions testing on 1995 vehicles and older. I understand that I can still receive a fine regardless of this.

Info on my car if it helps: 1988 Super ETA 2.7i conversion. 325i intake manifold, M30 AFM, KA Motors CAI, 19lb injectors, stock 2.5i cam, SSSquid Tuning Stage 1 "2.7i w/ M30 AFM" chip, Stromung Exhaust

    Thanks in advance

A muffler has enough back pressure in it to not ruin your low end. I just put a magnaflow high flow cat in my car that was dual 2.5 in and out. Haven't looked back since.

Thanks for the reply. Do you remember what the part number for that Magnaflow cat was? I'm interested in looking into it

I don't, I'll try and ask the guy who did it for me. lol

If you don't have to smog your car, I'd go straight into a good muffler.

          I'd appreciate it.

And I've had it in mind since New Jersey's laws changed. I'll update this thread with my final decision

If you want to put something in front of the Stromung, I recommend the Vibrant ProXS. The combo has been fantastic for me.

I have a stromung behind a stock cat and it's at the limit of noise for my taste so I suspect a straight pipe will be VERY loud.

I've been thinking about pairing the Stromung with two 12" 2.25" inlet/outlet Vibrant high flow resonators. One for each side. I might give it a shot.

                How's your setup, sound wise?

I'm currently running bav auto headers and mid pipes (which are essentially straight pipes... no cat) with a stromung exhaust and I am very happy with the sound. No the loudest thing ever. Totally bearable and most importantly, does not drone!

                    Was there a performance change?

I have one coming within the next week or so.

There's a nice placebo effect but I'd say zero actual difference. Others may disagree.

The good news is that the tone has mellowed and sounds even better as time goes by....or I'm losing my hearing :)

                      I'd do it again
