I was driving down a local divided highway, and stopped at a light. I decided to get a little "spirited", and floored it from about 2000RPMs once the light turned green. I wound out 1st, shifted to 2nd (getting some nice wheelspin out of my AVS ES100's, I might add ), wound out 2nd, and then went to shift to third, and everything went wrong.
I went to put it into third, heard a very short grinding noise like gears grinding from a mishift, then felt the shifter go numb and saw the RPMS climb to redline until I realized what was happening and let off the gas. I pulled into the local parking lot, and sat there in complete shock, wondering how much this was going to cost me. After I calmed down I started playing with the shifter, and realized there was no feel at all while trying to shift through any of the gates. I kept playing with it, and somehow managed to bump the transmission into reverse. I then reversed into a spot using the only gear the car now has, and called it a night.
So, given the symptoms, do you guys think it could just be something simple like the selector rod, or better yet, just one of the fasters for it? The reason I think that is because I did not hear any particularly bad noises (the gear grinding noise was VERY slight and for a short time), and reverse still works. If the whole tranny took a dump on me, I figure it would just kinda seize, no?
So I guess my qestions are: what do you think the problem could be? How hard is it to fix? Are there any writeups on the repair? Can I make some kind of temporary fix, just to get the car home?
Thanks a lot in advance for your time.
