Sweet Mk1 you've got there. Used to have one, but they are hard to find nowadays, at least on the east coast. Have you given any thought to a 16v or 2.0l ABA block swap?
Bought this car about 4 years ago non running for 16+ years ($300). Many $$ later and now we flog it at autox. Needs paint bad, but car has very little rust and the little rust it has is non structural.
Bumping this thread.
A couple years ago I sold the MK1 and picked this up from a friend.
As far as money goes i did really well with the GTI. I got the 02 very reasonably as well.
However, I missed the MK1 directly after selling it.
It's taken a while to find another one, but my wife found this about a month ago.
The condition is extremely good. This car is the best starting point for the money I've seen in a good while.
Will update with more pictures as it progresses.
Ive owned over a dozen mk1s. My personal fav were the mk1 Jetta coupes. I still own a bored out 1.6 8v motor that has lightened internals, big valve carb head, etc. I always wanted a Heron motor, but could never get my hands on one. This will have to do. I plan on building a Super Vee tribute racer some day. Im actually sourcing parts still. Audi 1.8T transmission plus got 2 intake manifold flanges cut, one for a ITB setup I plan on building
