    AC Dismantling

Pulling my motor this weekend, and i'll want to pull the AC system shortly there-after. Who's done it? i know some people sell their refrigerant, but I'm not worried about selling the R12. I'm worried about freezing my arm off.

    Any hints?

just bleed both valves, they are just like bicycle tire valves. Bleed them with a flathead screwdriver or something.

It isnt THAT cold thats its going to freeze your hand. Wives tales....

After that its simply disconnect the hoses, and pipes. The take the a/c compressor and bracket off the block.

When you take out the condenser, please wear a breathing mask. I had quite an experience In my garage with ac oil, involving an almost instant bloody nose, extreme headaces , and dizzyness. and my garage smelled like that oil for a long time. Also be discrete about releasing freon into the atmosphere as it is about a 250,000 dollar fine!!!! oh well it's not like anyone would know, unless you have an E.P.A agent living next door.
Just be sure to use a face mask!

Do as they said, and dont inhale the freon. THey will have to hang you upsidedown to get it out, it sinks, by the way, to the bottom ofyour lungs.

Whats the big deal about paying an out of the way garage $20 to recover it for you? This way the environment stays happy, you dont die, and there is nothing to worry about when taking apart the system. Christ, if you cant afford the $20...you got bigger problems then taking the A/C out of your car.

the problem is, my car doesn't move, and it's kinda an ordeal to trailer the car as the only trailer i have access to is a 48' enclosed triple axle. if i could just drop by a local shop with ease, have no worries this wouldn't be a thread here.

i'm just trying to weigh the options. the A/C needed a recharge anyway, so i'm not sure how much freon is in the system. i'll see if i can borrow an open car trailer and do it that way.

              ----
              edit:

perhaps to keep my hippie roots from crying out, i'll just leave the A/C compressor hanging in the car until i trailer it to my friend's welding shop. no problems.

              thanks for the input guys.

It is kind of irrelevant now that you are not pulling it out, but don't the bolts that hold the AC pump bracket on go into oil passageways? So, if you pull the bracket, all your oil will drain out of your engine? Not a very good thing IMHO.
