Advice for a first time autocrosser

Hey R3V, I'm thinking about doing the BMW CCA - Rocky Mountain - Autocross
Saturday, June 11. I have a 325iX with all season tires a few suspension upgrades blah blah.. If I sign up I'll be classified in the BDS class (big deal I know). Any tips for a rookie? What to bring? How to make sure I pass tech? What not to do? Do I need to buy a helmet? Throw it at me!

Well most autox organizers have a check list of what your car needs to pass tech, as well as a list of things to bring. I know the Golden Gate BMWCCA chapter did in CA.
Autox tech is not as strict as a tech check on a track/road cores. You are not going as fast, and there are no other cars on cores at the same time so way less danger.
Basically if your car is not a piece of shit you will be ok. No oil leaks that are just dripping constantly, loose wheel bearings, loos rusty exhaust, bald tires, lots of loose shit on the floor/dash/rear shelf, and so on. Battery must be secure. Some autox locations have sound level rules because of where they are located. Show up with a clean car, remove everything from the inside of the car that is not locked in the glove box or safely stowed in a place where it will roll around or fall out.
Bring a tire pressure checking device, and something to re inflate your tires. Maybe some extra gas if you dont plan on running a full tank at the event for weight. Some water, sun screen hat, and even a book or something because they will run different groups and classes and you will have some where around half an hour to wait for your runs.
Go to their website and download their list. If you sign up for the event you will get a whole bunch of info on all of this.

Most of the info you will need is towards the bottom of the page here. I am sure you have already looked at it.
The tech inspection is relaxed. Again as long as you have done the normal maintenance and your car is safe to drive on roads with out pieces falling off or fluids leaking out you will be good to go.

I'll check it out. I should pass tech. I just bought some new rear wheel bearings and axle boots If anyone has the SIR Bearing tool to rent local that'd be great!

Yeah totally agree, not really willing to buy new tires right now even though it's a huge plus. It's my daliy after all, not to say all seasons are good but they're just fine for DD duties. When I bought the car it needed new tires and snow was on the ground. Should of bought snows instead of no-seasons. I've driven the car in some twistes and seem to know the limit of my tires, which isn't very good compared to summers.

              Hey Chris,

It looks like you're already registered for the June autocross in BDS which is an awesome class with lots of friendly people and can be very comptitive. We typically will have anywhere between 2-6 people competing in E30's at a given event and its a lot of fun.

All-seasons will get you around the course to begin with but a set of summer tires would eventually be required to be competitive and quite frankly make things a lot more fun. Anyway it's not like we're competing for money so either way come on out and have fun.

Drop me a PM if you have any additional questions but be warned it is addicting.

I'm going to buy a used set of Falken Azenis 205/50/15 tomorrow. That's the biggest tire I can fit without rolling fenders/ trimming the iX flares.
