Building a IE 2.9 for my iX

Well I decided to assemble the head with the new SS valve/ new valve guides and seals. I have or order the following and picked up a donor block today. Do I need a pnp megasquirt to run this setup safely? Thanks

    Vac performance valve springs
    -Vac high performance valve guides
    -supertech ss valves
    -HD rockers
    -Nuke adjustable cam gear

    -84mm stroke (m52 crank)
    -85mm bore 10:1 comp. pistons (IE/Mahle pistons)
    -135mm H-beam rods
    -8Lb RHD lightened flywheel
    -Schmeidmann SS Long tubes

it should be fine on Motronic will probably want a chip though. MS PNP does gives more control and will be better at maximizing its potential. id get it running on stock stuff with chip and see how you go initially and reassess from there this way you know the base tune will be safe for running it in
89 E30 325is Lachs Silber - currently M20B31, M20B33 in the works, stroked to the hilt...

I have a sssquid chip that can get reflashed. I'm tempted to grab ms2 pnp to get use to the tuner studio after I get it running on montronic.

Sounds like a good idea, many thanks digger!:D

this is very close to what I'm currently building, except I'm using Dbilas cam and valve springs, 323i e21 flywheel and Bavauto long tube headers.
Block is already assembled, head is assembled, just need time to start a mockup.

The e21 flywheel is 13.3lbs correct? Seems like the rhd 7lb (Not 8lb) will be crazy for mainly a daily but I don't think I will keep it as a DD. I can always lighten my stock flywheel or buy that one.. Im going to order some long tubes from IE if these don't fit. I went ahead a picked up a donor block tonight for the 2.9

So I went ahead and ordered a podi gauge with afr, oil temp, and pressure and got a adaptor for the stock oil pressure sender from bimmerheads..

I kinda want to delete the oil cooler but idk what to tap into for oil temp if I do that

On a sidenote. I got some IE long tube headers. Machine shop said the VAC valve guides I gave them were undersized. the stock ones they took out measured .521 I believe or .520. The ones I got from VAC (standard size according to them) were .514 so they just dropped right through so I'm going to try to exchange for some .519 guides instead..

Im also going to contact Jim with Metric Mechanics and ask if a special tool is needed to remove/ install the intermediate bearings in the block. Im afraid that even if I cover them with grease they will be ruined in the hot tank. This block was sitting outside when I got it so the coolant jackets etc aren't looking to hot..

                    a few options,

                    -a sandwich plate spacer
-same place as the pressure sensor
-11421265669 which is the same as the angled oil cooler head but without out the fittings for the cooler came on early m20 e21 perhaps e28 (pretty rare)
                    -sump

-I'm unsure if the sandwich plate will fit with my headers yet
-Same place as the pressure sensor won't work because there's nowhere to tap once the adapter is installed.
-Doubt I'll find one and I'm not spending $320 on one
-I'm susprised you recommend the sump as it reads lower than actual temp

I curious because I saw someone use bolts to block off the two oil cooler line holes with bolts. Then tap the hollow bolt on the housing. What do you think of that? If that's ok does anyone know the size of the bolt I'll need?..

Also the Podi gauge that I ordered. I'm not sure if it's coming with a sensor for the oil temp but I saw he has fittings for sale separate. I plan on autoX a lot so I figured it would be nice to have oil temp.

I do want to delete it. It's mostly a daliy driver. I just need a good way to get the oil temp.

i look at it this why way do you need oil temp? is the sump better than nothing?

the sump is kind of a reference temp, when you are idling and driving slow the temps are "inaccurate" but it likely doesn't matter because why do you need to know when you dont overheat oil under those conditions.

when you are fanging it ,the temps will read pretty close (other members have said 10-15 degrees because the oil recirculates much quicker and cant sit in the pan and cool off. ultimately if it reads 15-20F off does it matter?

if its racecar for sure the best data is not coming from a sensor in the drain plug

i have one in the sump, i'm going install another one near the filter with a switch to change which sensor the gauge reads off. im not sure what im going to learn with both or if it is going to change anything except having two sources of data

Yeah I dont really need it but I will have a gauge setup for it. Might aswell, idk the podi gauge setup has 3 different things at minimum and I figured I would go with AFR and then Oil pressure. I know its as useful at a volt meter on a e30 but I figure if I ever decide to go FI it will be there and the oil temp is pretty important anyway as I know there is supposed to be a sweet spot and if Im running too light of a oil I will know.. No real point though..

This is the setup I am thinking about..

that is how i am going to do it when i get a spare bolt.

someone on here said you arent supposed to block the oil cooler hoses, they should be looped if deleting the cooler unless you mod the t-stat

Wow that's a total pain. Basically you don't have to loop them if you mod the T-Stat? I'll have to look for that info.

Ps the IE headers fit good. Seems like they fit better than on rwd cars. Seems like the iX engine sits higher than the rwd engine does. Because the Schmiedmann headers fit but we're rubbing against the firewall/ floor.
