    Built-up M42 engine

    hey, thought I'd run this by you guys:
    (hi all 318is peeps)

    I had missed this thread at bf.c ("I swear, I read it for the articles")

    Built-up E36 M42 engine

    The dude, gizmo318i is in S.A. and had an E36 M42 with the serpentine belt etc.

    okay, to boil 10 pages down, the recipe is something like this:

    This conversion cost me less than people think.
    Working with the exchange rate of 6.8 Rand=1 Dollar.
    M47 Crank=$235
    M44 sub assemlby=$147
    S50 pistons=$147
    engineering=$88
    M3 injectors=$88
    upper+lower gasket set=$250
    Dastek unichip+tuning=$264.
    Total=$1219.

    (Cheap price for 168whp)

    Thoughts? He didn't post a dyno sheet but claims 168 whp. That would make around... (help someone) 200 or so at the crank... (roughly 15% losses).

    from what i've heard tho, the recipe doesnt quite go together as easily as it appears. not to mention the fact that the magical cranks arent exactly easily obtainable.

    if you get it done for that little money, i'l do something that i cant think of right now.

      I agree, that pricing is not realistic in the least bit.

        Yeah - let me tell you - those M47 cranks are about as easy to dig up as a full set of Tyrannosaurus bones.

          does anyone have/know 'realistic' pricing for these parts, esp the crank?

            Exactly. Either he is doing all the labor on the motor himself, or a very close friend is cutting him an awesome deal.

            Good luck finding an M47 crank easily, for that cheap, since no car with that engine has EVER been sold here.

            Plus, you could just swap in a chipped but otherwise stock M50 for roughly the same price and get the same peak hp that he is claiming. And have more torque and an overall more reliable engine.

            I give the guy credit for going where few have bothered, but it still seems like a waste of time/money/effort to me

              What if you just put in a E36 M42/44 with a DASC?
              Would that be reaslistic? Seems as though the common answer I've heard is that for the amount of effort and $, might as well go M5x/S5x

                The crank is part number 11212247514/5 and it comes with the bearings, It is currently on back order as you can imagine and is priced at around a grand. Any US dealer can order it for you just bring the cash.
