allright, well, I'm going to order that stuff tomorrow.. (from BMA) and I'll post up about my results. I'm going to get the E30 line to start. If I have to get the E36 HP line later, oh well, it's only money right?

For anybody thinking of going with the manual rack:

      Euro manual rack:

      32111130169 - $297 - remfd rack
      32111130842 - $433 - new rack

      prices are from PP

I'm going with the Z3 rack while installing an S52. I'm just wondering about the responsiveness of the rack. With my stock rack now, I can out turn the rack. Going to a Z3 seems like it'd make it a lot worse. Since i'm going S52 anyway, think this will be a problem? I've never seen a PS overdrive pulley :/

Let me clarify here. From the list, if i have an airbag car and all my hoses/reservoirs/tie rods are in good shape and were recently replaced, i only need...

        Self Locking Nuts - - - - - - 07129964672 - - - - x2 - - -$0.60
        Copper Seals 14x20 - - - - -32411093596 - - - - -x4 - - -$0.68
        Copper Seals 16x22 - - - - -32411093597 - - - - -x4 - - -$1.04
        Self Locking Nuts - - - - - - 07129922716 - - - - -x4 - - $1.20
        Spacer - - - - - - - - - - - -72111847480 - - - - -x2 - - -$1.92
        Nut - - - - - - - - - - - - - -72111977925 - - - - -x2 - - -$1.10

Do i still need those spacers on the rack mounting points?

As time went on, the factory developed the car each year, making it faster, more comfortable, and capable of handling at higher speeds.
You don’t want this. You want the trickiest, most dangerous, oldest model you can find. Only then can you prove to the world that you’re a man.

Yes, you will still need the spacers for the rack swap.

            Just an added tip.

The spacers didn't fit for me - it was a bigger gap.

So, I went to Home Depot, got a little piece of pipe that would fit snugly around the bolt, and cut it down with a dremel so I used each half on both sides.

Didn't budge even with the bolts out! :D

That's a great idea for not only the rack bolts, but for teh steering knuckle bolts too right?

I just purchased a Z3 1.9l rack. I was wondering if the steering angle in these racks are compromised in relation to the e30 rack. For my use, I'd like to get as much steering angle as possible.

As far as I can tell the angle is the same only the number of turns to lock has changed in my car.

My car never had power steering from factory.

Is there a way I can seal a e36 rack, and not have to worry about potential problems with that?

I've heard older mechanics say that you can take a power steering rack and fill it full of grease instead of fixing a bad power steering system.

The exception is that the lower the turns to lock the rack has the harder it will be to turn the steering wheel without the hydraulic assistance that power steering pump gives you. If you plan on filling an E36 rack with grease then I would recommend sticking to a regular E36 3.2 rack.

This is a really great write up Bud. I was sweating bricks when I ordered a used 97 e36 M3 rack because I am doing a M30 3.5L swap into my 87is

It's known that the m30 oil pan has just about 1/8" clearance from the steering rack when installed and I was wondering if the 97 M3 rack would clear. Looking at the pic below, you placed spacers on top of the rack, did it drop a bit lower or is it at the same height?

It can remain at the same height if the mounting points have the same bottom distance.

                            Thanks.

Looking at your pics with the stock steering rack and the e36 rack, it does look like it dropped the same length of the spacers.

Now I am wondering if the e36 m3 rack has the same mounting point thickness, it should.

I just hope the m30 oil pan would not touch it, seems 99% it wont.

The height will the the same BUT if the M30 oil pan is any lower be warned that an E36 rack is slightly wider in radius than the original E30 steering rack.

You may be better off with a Z3 2.8 rack because it is actually smaller in radius and more likely to fit with the M30 oil pan.

Unfortunately I have no experience installing an E36 rack in an E30 with an M30 engine so I cannot say 100%. The only way to know for sure is to get under the car and give it the ole college try.
