I was driving my 325i vert automatic on Friday and the car just cut off power but it hesitated before it just turn off . It cranks but will not start . My friend who also has a E30 vert said it was mostly likely the fuel pump . I wanted know what you guys think since this is my 1st BMW so I am still learning alot about the car everyday . I know the same thing happen to me when I owned a 1993 VW Passat Vr6 and it was the fuel pump . Any advice would be great .

I hate to add the obvious ... but remove the oil cap and have someone check that the cam is turning while trying to start the car.
If that's OK, go for the spark check.
If everything still passes, jumper the fuel pump relay and listen for the fuel pump.
Let us know what you find!101

I would try this step first because its probably the simplist step, check your battery. Then take your rear seat off pull the connector off the fuel pump. Take a multi meter and set it on 20 volts. If you're getting 12v it's probably a bad fuel pump. If you're getting 1-11v could be the relay. If you're getting no volts it could be an incomplete circuit. Check for continuity when cranking the car. Again it could be the relay or a broken wire. Then I would check fuel pressure if the pump is good and spark after that.

Easy way to check for fuel is to undo the hose clamp on the fuel line connected to the fuel pressure regulator then jump the fuel pump. Have a water bottle or something over the nipple of the fuel pressure regulator and when you jump the fuel pump gas should shoot right into the bottle if your pump is working.
Also make sure you have gas. I chased my own tail solving a similar problem even though I wasn't driving and it was just because the tank was empty and the gauge is broken. Unless you are 1000000% sure you have fuel pull the pump, it's super easy and shine a light into the tank.
Like someone else said, always check your battery first as well.BMW tech
