Cripes. Looks like I was right when I did some back-of-the-envelope stuff and determined I could build an M20 2.8 for less than a M42 2.0

Still need rings, bearings, pump rotors? Thermostat, water pump, and the misc engine gaskets. Yikes... that thing got expensive quick

        Only I don't want an M20. I'm happy with the M42[emoji1]

I wasn't trying to say you should have done an M20, just remarking on how your convenient tabulation confirmed my previous thoughts.

where'd you get the crank from? If BMW themselves for that price I know what I'm going to do

I got mine from the UK, private seller. Through BMW they're $1200. I'm not sure you could get one since it's a "euro" part.

I too eagerly await completion of this build, and would be happy to help swapping the engine should it be needed.

How is this coming along? Thinking of refreshing mine over the winter. Going to place a call to Metric Mechanic to inquire about their kits.

I just put it on hold for now. I will pick back up with the build here really soon.

Sweet. I've been half-assedly looking for a spare m42 to build and boost. Now seeing this threat is getting me excited again. This winter I'm going with a single mass-lightened flywheel, Z4 shifter, new clutch, and either a 4:10 or 3:75lsd. I have in open 4:10 in line now and thinking about dropping down since i eventually plan to boost.
                            DENY IGNORANCE!

I think 3.73 would be perfect for FI. I ran 3.73 on my previous stock M42, and it was perfect for hwy driving.
