    low engine oil message

    1992 525iT
    186k miles

I changed the oil about 700 miles ago. The car tells me that the engine oil is low but not all the time. I checked the oil and its fine. Is this common?
I also get the low coolant, but thats fine as well.

You need new sensors for both
The first car I ever rode in was an e30

This, I really don't see anything else that could be the culprit. Relatively easy fixes as well. Make sure that you drain your oil before replacing your oil level sensor.

or double check the check control by trying a known working module.

Both sensors are known to respond well to cleaning. If the float is still on the one in the coolant tank carefully remove it without breaking the two tabs, clean the float and sensor. The sensor in the oil pan is best done at oil change time for obvious reasons. It can be cleaned in kerosene or a carbon remover such as Seafoam. It'll need to soak a bit and be sloshed around. More often than not cleaning works to restore function.
