I think the S38 is about 8kg or 17.6 lbs heavier than the M30. However, it is also a bit longer near the tstat and throttle body meaning you have to hammer the firewall to put the engine in the car.
E30.de has a write up in German that you could translate through google or altavista.
The s38 is also way more expensive (about US$7000 just for the engine). I got an entire 535i drivetrain, a 3.73 diff, exhaust system and radiator for US$1300.

I have allready encounted the fact that the S38 engines are dam exspensive compared to a M30.
You should be able to use a reg. standard tranny from any M30 car correct?? E28/E34
Good question... I would check out the BMW Parts Database and compare the bell housings. You should be able to. The S14 is basically the S38 with 2 cylinders cut off, and the S14's trannies will bolt up to the M30, so I guess the same would be true in reverse. That would save you atleast a grand.
