    H&R + 318is Confusion

Thanks to the support of R3v and other E30 enthusiasts buying my E30 tees, my E30 will soon be back on the road. And, on the road to perfection, I'm going to invest in all new suspension.

But, my friends, there seems to be some confusion about H&R sport springs, their model numbers, and ride height. Here's a thread with the background information: http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/showthread.php?t=148569.

Essentially, the H&R sport springs that are recommended for the 318is (50404-55) don't actually lower the car very much. H&R's application guide says they lower it 1.2" front and rear--okay. (http://www.hrsprings.com/application...ults/4/77/1991)

Looking at the H&R application guide for the E30 M3 we see OE Sport Springs (50404-55) listed as lowering the car 0.25" in the front and none in the rear (http://www.hrsprings.com/application...ults/4/83/1991). But, the regular Sport Springs listed for the M3 (50406) are listed as lowering it 1" in the front and 0.75" in the rear.

That means the H&R Sports for the M3 should lower the 318is another 3/4" for the same price.

Is there any reason the M3 sports wouldn't fit on the 318is? Can anyone shed any more light on this situation?

    Thanks

      Hi sexy.

HR makes all kinds of random springs. the make sport for 318is,325i,325ic and OE sport springs, which are just a waste of time. The ones you want are HR race made for the m3. the rates are much higher. However, the others are better for DD. But dont waste money on the ones that say "OE."

*if you change your springs, buy the shocks to match*

If low is what you want, go H&R Race. (unless coilovers are an option)

I wouldn't say OE sports should be over looked. You just need to figure out what ride heght you want.

not really. the car looks like it bc the fenders but you'll see it measures flat. IE sells rear spring spacers that make it look flat. i use them in all my cars now.

Gotcha. Part number 50404-88 for the M3 springs, and are these the spring spacers you're talking about?

ya, love them! it's just enough to make a late model e30 look flat.

So those spacers just raise the rear slightly?

                      Early 318i (29664) work well on 318is.
Example with lots of pics here, old thread but whatever:

                        yes, about 1/3"

i put then right on top of the spring pads. i put the top pad in, with the large point. then slide the spacer over the point and then put the HR race spring in.

do note. if you have not done your bushings you will hear clunking, as they will move bc the spring is so strong.
