The fuel rail doesnt need to come completely off but you do need to remove the two 10mm bolts towards the front of the rail, which will allow you to lift it enough to clear the thermostat housing.
    Sorry for the bump, but where the hell are those 2 10mm bolts holding the rail? Do I need to remove the intake manifold to see them?

    Edit: Think I found them - do I need to remove the valve cover to get to them? This seems like a lot of work just to get the thermostat housing off. I want to avoid pulling the valve cover as I just replaced the gasket and don't want to have to do it again.
