    M60 Swap thread

I am going to be adding more and more info to this thread as I find it, so to basically have as much good info in one place as possible.

    1. Engine block numbers - post 13
    2. Intake manifold - obd1 from e32/e34 540i/740i cars
    3. Fuel rail - same as above, e38/e39 cars had only ONE line going to the rail as the FPR is built into the fuel filter.
    4. TB - same as above, e38/e39 cars had a fancy electronic TB with built in ICV - DO NOT WANT
    5. Exhaust Manifolds - e32/e34 are not compact enough to work, e38/e39/x5 are the ones to get
    6. Tranny - e34 530i 5speed or e34 540i / e39 540i 6-speed.
    7. Radiator - some use e28 535i with good fan(s) or possibly a z3m OR custom radiator or modify rad core to fit stock 540/740i rad.
    8. Wiring - manual non vanos harness from e34
    9. DME - 404
    10. Flywheel -
    11. Clutch -
    12. Exp tank - e32/e34 firewall mounted or early e30 style on the driver side.
    13. Booster/MC optons (fun part)
    14. If you are in CA and going to BAR it, then magnaflow makes a CA specific legal cats # 36005
Browse all MagnaFlow Catalytic Converter replacements for your car, truck or SUV. From direct-fit, universal, CARB compliant or federal compliant, buy the converter that your vehicle needs at MagnaFlow.com.

    15. steering shaft modification -
    16.

Picked up a couple parts today from a 740i....

Obd1 intake manifold/fuel rail, injectors, 404dme, manual tb and 4 fairly new coils (2006, the other 4 were old).

Look at the size of the tb vs b35 :o

It will be a while before it happens, I plan on getting all the things needed for the swap and of course re-fresh the v8 before it goes in.

about 300hp in 2500lb should be fun hehe :)

I understand that it will be a while, I'm not in a hurry. Your motor is conveniently refreshed, though.

If I end up selling it it will be a complete package, at the point I am not sure what will happen to it :)

I think I might be first in line to buy the M30. Didn't I ask about it first?

I got the maf housing today from another 740i, the first one was cracked :)

This 93 740i was missing the whole engine/tranny, must have been a good one.

                          ENGINE BLOCK NUMBERS

"How do you tell which material is in your short block ? That part is fairly easy. But it requires getting under the right front of the car. All M60 and M62 blocks have casting numbers on the right side, directly alongside the 3rd cylinder, slightly above the coolant drain bolt.

These are the casting numbers to look for:

                          Nikasil M60B30 1 725 970 or 1 741 212
                          Nikasil M60B40 1 725 963 or 1 742 998
                          Alusil M60B30 1 745 871
                          Alusil M60B40 1 745 872
                          Alusil M62B44 1 745 873
                          "

I'll be watching this thread, I'm interested to see what everyone is doing for engine mounts, subframe spacers etc.. I'm debating either this or an lsx swap somewhere down the road. I love the m60/2 though. Are you planning on using a 5 speed, 6 speed or just whatever you stumble upon? Keep in mind the e34 6 speeds used larger clutches and flywheels, 265mm vs 240mm in all of the e39's.

Pretty sure you can use an auto harness also, that's probably going to be your best bet because there were only ~1350 e34 6 speeds imported, so finding manual harnesses is going to be a bitch

Subframe spacers aren't necessary (good), all depends on the mounts :)

I priced the 530i 5speed and they are going for about 1/2 the price of the 6speed and provide more flywheel/clutch choices (as you mentioned above due to size).

I would do an ls1 but not legal in SM.
