    Noob electrical questions

I've located a 94 740il m60b40 engine and am working on arranging pickup at this time. The engine comes without a wire harness.

My plan is to put it in with a 530i 5 spd manual.

Are all e34 530i, 540i, and e32 740i automatic engine harnesses for m60's the same? I'm assuming the manual harness is slimmer, but do I actually need one? Are the 540i 6 spd and 530i 5 speed harnesses the same?

Since this engine came from an automatic car, Is the DME going to work with the factory chip?

    Thanks,
    Justin

E32 and e34 harnesses are laid out a little different but essentially function the same. If the harness used has traction control, x20 on the e32 is a different shape and different wires go to it. The m60b30 uses an air pump on late models, just eliminate pin 19 to truncate the pump. The DME will work just set up the harness as manual by removing the wires that go to pins 11, 62, 82, 83, 84, 85, and 86 (this will remove traction control too). Also, images can be burnt to the 404 dme’s via TunerPro to make auto or manual if trouble arises.

Cool, thanks! I think I'll just pick up an auto harness then and strip it down, since they are easier to find.

B30 and B40 have different knock sensors => different connectors. They can be changed very easily, though.

Actually, from some research I did on realoem, it appears knock sensors mainly changed by date, not engine size.

            12141702163 is the knock sensor for 4/93+ 530i, 5/93+ 540i and 740i

12141736303 is the knock sensor for 3/93 and older 530i, and 4/93 and older 540i and 740i.

There is a one month separation between the switchover date to the newer sensors for b30 vs b40.

So if I were to get a pre-4/94 530i harness, then I would just need the older sensors, and vice versa.
