    m20 Interchangeability

I have a 1983 520i with a blown motor that i have been given that I want to get going for my son. I understand the m20 engines of later models have the same mounting dimensions but can anyone advise me how feasable it is to replace this engine with a later model m20 out of say a 1992 320i. I am particularly concerned about the cables, engine managemnent etc. Also, is it practical to bolt on the existing accessories to the new motor and thus retain the cabling etc even though the engine capacity might be different?

Hoping someone can help, any advice at all gratefully recieved.

The only thing that could prove difficult is integration into the car's main harness/fuse box connections. I know that the 3 series and 5 series are totally different in this respect. It's possible that an engine harness from a later 525e or 528e that has a Motronic 1.1 M20 could work, but I'm not sure if the body harness connection is the same on the early and late cars.
