Project Unicorn Poop: Euro 323i Baur

Found this car on BaT and decided it was going to be my 4th E30.

    Prior history:
1989 325is (rat-box, learned on it, stripped it, and sold it to a ChumpCar team)
1986 325e turbo (got ripped off, but technically owned it)
1991 318ic (Colin Chapman build; 5-lug & big brakes, torsen diff, poly/solid bushings everywhere, weight reduction, hardtop, & ITBs)

Bid for the chance to own a No Reserve: Euro 1985 BMW Baur 323i at auction with Bring a Trailer, the home of the best vintage and classic cars online. Lot #4,491.

If the last car was inspired by Colin Chapman's doctrine, the ideas I have for this one are more in line with "what would Carroll Shelby have done with a unique E30, given access to the BMW parts-bin".

Gotta say, I'm pretty happy with this car right out of the box. The 2.3-liter engine doesn't pull as hard on the top end as my ITB'd build did (as you'd expect), but it's got a very usable powerband.

It came with a mild aftermarket exhaust that I haven't identified yet (I'm on the way back home from SoCal today), but it's in the sweet spot of "sounds a bit sporty but probably won't catch police attention", so it's probably staying.

First things on the menu are small ancillary issues (speedo, turn signals, and stereo are all a bit flaky).

But for today, I'll be cruising back north from Los Angeles to home in the Bay Area by way of the Pacific Coast Highway; Pismo Beach, In'n'Out Burger, and the 152 through the South Bay Area mountains.

It's good to be back in an E30.
    past:
    1989 325is (learner shitbox)
    1986 325e (turbo dorito)
    1991 318ic (5-lug ITB)
    1985 323i baur
    current:
    1995 M3 (suspension, 17x9/255-40, borla)

On BaT, cars are usually showed as perfect, minty collector examples. Its gonna be nice to see the reality of what the quality of a BaT car is, even with a lower-price car.

Perfect day to coast up the PCH, wish the 1 wasn't closed because Big Sur on a drop top E30 is something people dream of

Nice pickup DK. Awesome Baur. What a rare weird car.

I wonder how much the torsional stiffness is affected by removing the sheet metal top compared to a regular coupe.

Nothing so crazy as that planned. I'm almost 40 and don't want to drive a street-legal race car anymore, and this unique car should be kept period-correct, I think.

Well- some of them. Steer clear of anything they describe as a "Project" in the sub-20k section. I've got electrical to figure out on this one, but otherwise it's serviceable.

It feels about the same as my first coupe. Definitely not like the floppy vert was without hardtop. We'll see what I think after fresh suspension & bushings.

I don't, or I'd be swapping everything over. Long story, not for the public. Short version: don't girlfriend someone you met on Tinder.

Interesting thing I learned on the way home- apparently Baur gas tanks are about 9 gallons? The gague read almost empty and that's what it took to fill up. I need to get this thing on a rack and find out what else is weird about it. Paging kronus...

oops. It is not, to my knowledge. Car was originally silver, and should have been left that way in my opinion.

                          It may become black next.
