^^^ I second your bump and call for a vote. I gotta say this is one of my favorite E30s on r3v. Beautiful car, so well thought out, and such a balance between fast and handling and livability. Great color, great interior.

So I'm sure this has been discussed and debated at length, but this parts list doesn't seem at all complicated. Why aren't people building nice 210hp m20s over m30s, or 8-engined B52s for carpet bombing?

Is there dark magic in that head and the development of it by Alpina? Is the ECU secret sauce? Is it cost of all the pieces and machining, so that an S5x swap is way cheaper hp per dollar? I honestly would like to learn this - I remember Alpina sedans in Road & Track as a kid, and thinking...that's the perfect everyday sportscar.

We have an eta, so I'm a little clueless on what an m20 is capable of. I guess I always thought Alpinas had m30s in them (some did, no?)

Is this block stroked or bored to 2.7?

                        - crankshaft BMW part : 11 21 12 87 260 ( don't know from which model )
                        - Mahle pistons + piston rings ( various sizes and part numbers )
                        - Alpina modified cylinder head
                        - schriek camshaft 268 degres.
                        - bigger intake and exhaust valves.
                        - airflowmeter BMW part : 13 62 12 86 615 ( original Euro 325i )
                        - modified Bosch Motronic ECU
                        - Spark plugs are Bosch W7DC
                        - Alpina exhaust header 2x 3 in 1

All other mods are suspensions, interior...

With the B3, Alpina tried to build an improved 325i, not a race machine. Originally the B3 was dedicated to german business man, driving lot of kilometers on the german highways, at high speed ( bigger fuel tank, no speed limits on german highways.. )

                        Well, I hope that helps.

                        Cheers / Pierre

Well, I found this over on the M20 forum.... (in 2011 dollars)

"Main things to consider on top of a standard M20 rebuild are:

head port work $500-1000 varies a lot
                          camshaft $500
                          oversize valves $600
                          uprated rockers $500
                          uprated valve springs $400
                          Tuned Headers $1000
Short runner intake setup and plenum (i.e itb setup) $1000-2000
                          ECU and tuning $1000
                          Pistons $1000
                          Crank $300
                          Rods $400

So at least $8k on top of a standard rebuild. Some parts can be had for cheaper but others may cost more so it's a ballpark number. So who wants to play?"

                          And this is good info...
