I've used this method a few times now with good success.
One thing to watch out for. I forgot to put the spacer behind the cam gear on the exhaust cam. When I tightened the bolts down, they stuck out the back of the cam flange, hit the bearing cap and snapped the flange off the end of the cam. I was using a 1/4" drive ratchet and didn't notice any extra torque or anything. They really are brittle if you force them the wrong way.
