manually runniung fuel pump, but no fuel

Hi, i am working on my 325 and finally at the point where im about to start it but i have no power to the fuel pump, that is a different issue however.

In the meantime, i just want to get fuel delivered to the rail, so i hooked up 12v to the fuel pump manually and im noticing that even when i run the pump manually, there is still no fuel being delivered to the rail or hose, no pressure, no nothing.

This car has been sitting for some time, about 8 months now, and I am wondering if the fuel filter might be somehow clogged or something that would be preventing fuel to be at least pumped thru the hose.

The pump is certainly turning on, its running, but with the two fuel hoses disconnected up front, no fuel.

Yes i have gas in the tank, not much, but enough to start it.

I suppose I should just change the filter anyway, but I was just wondering if anyone knew of anywhere else to look. I suppose the pump could also be faulty as well and while running, something inside broken so to prevent it from pumping.

    Any suggestions would help
    thanks!

have you disconnected the line where the fuel filter is (before fuel filter, then after) and see if it pumps fuel in to a container?

well now i feel like an idiot for not trying that but i did just try that and its definitely not pumping past the filter. I might try without the filter next?

Next culprit after that would definitely be the pump, but It it very much running. I havn't encountered a pump before that sounded like it was running but didn't pump.

would a filter clog up so much after sitting for a period of time to not let fuel pass? Im currently at quarter tank, so plenty of fuel to start it

yes, try with the filter on, then without to eliminate if the problem is a filter. fyi orielly has e30 fuel filter for 5 bucks (cheapest i've found anywhere). is it a early model (2 pumps) or late model (1 pump)?

one of my cars had about 1lb of rust in the filter, that caused erratic flow when I first bought it.

ok, so just took the filter off, looks pretty clean too, very dirty but doesn't look to be that old. Started the pump and nothing. So i guess its the pump, I am going to take it out to inspect it next. I can't see how this thing is running but just not pumping, maybe the internal filter/screen is clogged?

Oh yea and oriely's is the great. I need to make a stop up there to grab a new filter out of good measure.

just a matter of inspecting it, also the fuel tank and its "reserve pan" that it sits on for any debris.

do the fuel sender and fuel pump need to have power applied in order for fuel to be pumped and sent to the rail?

I am only applying power to the pump, not the separate fuel sender, the one with the 4 8mm nuts which attach it to the pump.

Other than that, This car is an auto to manual swap, I am now wondering what is preventing power from going back to the pump.

No, the sender power is not tied into the pump power.

Right, they're separate connections, but does power need to be applied to both sender and pump in order for fuel to be pumped?

                        No.

12v at the pump and a ground should activate it.

FYI bypassing the fuel filter is a really bad idea. If it is plugged there's crud in your tank and you wind up pumping all that shit into your injectors !!

Yea I know, but I never bypassed the filter and connected to the hard lines, I simply put a pan under the car and disconnected the filter and then ran the pump to see if any fuel was being pumped at all.
