    Ix booster

Can anyone tell me why the ix needed to have the booster it has? What is different about the ix braking system than other e30s?

Nothing. It's because of the tilt of the motor.

Its a smaller diameter dual-diaphragm booster instead of the larger diameter single diaphragm booster that comes in the rwd car. And yes I believe it's for engine clearance because of the different tilt in the IX vs rwd.
That's why it's also common for 24v swaps.

The master cylinder bore and calipers are the same between the models. The only differences are the IX has higher offset rear rotors (fronts are the same) and the abs has a special "ice mode".

Hmmm. I didn't think the m20 in the ix is tilted any different than any other e30 but I could be wrong.

As far as i know the tilt is the same, but the steering shaft is different and that could be why it needed a smaller diameter booster.

The tilt is the same. I remember reading about this some time ago and no one really knows why it uses a different booster.

Yes, the iX has the same engine tilt as every other M20.

I always assumed BMW spec'd a more powerful booster because the car is heavier.

I think they would have put it on the vert and touring too

I think it's just because the steering shaft didn't allow for the bigger diameter 325 booster.

Maybe so, but isn't the steering column in the same place as a regular e30? Obviously how it ties to the ix rack is different but where it goes thru the fire wall would be the same.

                      It's at a different angle.
