    Fuel tank compatibility

My '91 318is has a dented fuel tank. I found a replacement but it's from a '91 318ic cabrio. Realoem shows a different part number for both.

    318is is 16111177983
    318ic is 16111180175

Realoem says that 16111180175 supercedes and is "exchangeable retrospectively" for 16111177983, but doesn't list a M42 318 coupe as using it. So before I go and buy this tank I'm hoping somebody can verify if it's compatible.

I haven't checked but if your car used 161111779, then yo can sue the later part.
You can find out more by entering the last seven of your VIN on realoeam.com.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Look for the crossover tube. If it has that, it's the 55 liter small tank that came in the 91 318is. I have a 1992 318iC and it has the big tank without the crossover tube. They do interchange but it's some work. Easier to find the small tank.

Is the crossover tube visible from under the car?

yup, hangs below the driveshaft, connects the 2 halves of the tank at the bottom.

Other giveaway is that the left side of the tank is about an inch 'shorter'
(higher up in the body) so that fuel will flow downhill into the right half of the tank...
