It's not something I'll be doing daily. Plus I'm probably moving 30 miles closer to my work and school in a few months. Kinda want to have a street legal drz before school starts. Just waiting on my refund...it can come fast enough ha. I've already got a list of about 20 bikes in my area I'm looking at. Is there anyone on R3V in the Phoenix area that has a dual sport/supermoto? Also, I do want to make a trip out to California possibly next summer and ride through some of the mountain, ie. Big Bear. Where do you guys in California usually ride?

I ride locally mostly, but Mammoth Mountain is fun. Having a street legal bike is the way to do it up there...ride to the trails!

I have no motor cycle experience or hand clutch experience.
It's the same as any other motorcycle. Its pretty easy, and is more forgiving than a car transmission IMHO. You get used to it pretty fast.

It's doable. You'll want something with a 6-speed and at least ~350 cc. I have an XT350 dual sport that will do 70 on the highway just fine, and I've ridden it 2+ hours at a stretch. You get blown around a lot and there isn't much passing power. That's not really supermoto territory though. I have 2 bikes; the XT and a vintage Suzuki when I plan to use the highway. Motorcycles are pretty cheap, I've found - I bought both my bikes and a good portion of my gear for less than your budget.

About the only thing SM's aren't good for is long freeway miles, A DRZ will do it all day long but you won't be very happy. They're pretty light and you get pushed around a bit by the turbulence coming off other vehicles.

My area I spend most of my time is in between hwy 50 and hwy 80 between Folsom Lake and Lake Tahoe, good god there is a shit load of everything and anything you'd ever want to ride on while on a supermoto.

Best ride for around town and tight twisties. long distance ugg. While they will do 100+ they fill strung out and the wind buffeting tires you out.

I can see it, it's on photobucket.

Kevin and Doug took us up in some dirt/mud two weekends ago, I'd be up for more of that. Saturday looks to be a bit better weather wise.
