    Another S50 E30 Build

okay so i finally started on my s50 install, after many hickups, it looks like i may have a running car in about a week.

my m20b25 started getting tired last year, and with all the swaps going on, i decided to bit the bullet in march and bought an s50b30 from an auto e36m3, off a member on e30tech. the seller delived the motor to me from socal for $2650, complete long block (minus the MAF, TB, engine arms, flywheel/clutch). the seller seemed honest, however a couple weeks later my mechanic took the head off, b/c we were going to do a complete gasket refresh, and we found the motor had a blown headgasket. contacted the seller, would not respond so i figure he knew about it, and didnt wanna take responsibility.

moving forward, i had the cyl head sent out to a machine shop to check the mounting surface for straightness, and pressure test it. i lucked out and the head wasnt cracked, so i had a valve job + 3angle valve job done. then i started amassing the parts for the swap, replacing EVERY gasket, hose, pulley, tensioners, many many screws, and man, can those parts add up to $$$$.00 quick...

soo i figured that since im replacing the motor, i mite as well do some other maintenance while im at it. replaced the brake system (hoses, MC, rotors OE, pads Hawk HPS. also doing rear subframe bushings, rear t/a bushings, and replaced the front subframe aswell, since i think my old one may be bent. Also decided to update the steering system to all e36 component, z3 2.7Turn rack, all e36 PS hoses + engine arm mount reservoir. for tranny im running a low mileage getrag260 w/ Doug's modified bace, UUC stage3 adjustable short shifter, all rebuilt linkages.

anyways, on to some pics of the starting process, more pics to come in the next week.

attaching cable to lift motor out

    nasty dirty engine bay...

deck cleaned up getting ready to put cyl head on.

    m20 flywheel freshly resurfaced

fresh subframe waiting to go in, also going to try and run the cylinder mount on pass side. has same height, and same bolt orientation as the boxy mount...long story why i have this one.

ebay SS headers wraped w/ black fiberglass, they arent done yet, but damn that stuff is itchy

    detail pic.

thats all i got for now, more to come...:p

Awesome! Sucks you had to deal with the fubared engine, but much better in the long run to have it all cleaned up / rebuild :)

How did you get the deck cleaned ? Nothing got in the oil/coolant passeges ?

i used alotta razor blades, wire blushes on the piston-tops, and 1000grit on the deck surface.

Nice , glad to see this thing finally underway .

On the header wrap I belive the general consensus is that it will actually shorten the life of the cheapie thin walled knock-off headers .

Schweet. Finally! I'd like to help out, but I've told myself I have to do SOMETHING on the 02 every day until it is DONE. That doesnt leave much time :)
Note to self, taking seat rails out and putting hole in my hand doesnt count as two days work.lol

              Have fun with the build

Finally we get to see the motor you have been working on.
Nice, it should feel pretty good once it goes in and fires up for the first time.

yeah, if the headers crack then so be it. they are cheapies, so i wont feel as bad. hehe

rite now i am tryn to source the Vanos alignment tool, so that we can get the motor assembled. Once the motor is in one piece, its gonna be a mad dash for the finish line.

I was actually going to ask about the fiberglass on the headers...what is the purpose?

heat insulation. hotter gasses move faster, also keeps the ambient engine bay temps down.
