    Nuclear fusion nears efficiency break-even

I read somewhere a year ago that we only harness one percent of the potential energy from nuclear fission reactors, and that we have enough energy with current Uranium supplies for all of the world's current energy requirements for 1000 years. Can't seem to find the book or link. Anyone heard of this?

According to the NEA, identified uranium resources total 5.5 million metric tons, and an additional 10.5 million metric tons remain undiscovered—a roughly 230-year supply at today's consumption rate in total. Further exploration and improvements in extraction technology are likely to at least double this estimate over time.
Two technologies could greatly extend the uranium supply itself. Neither is economical now, but both could be in the future if the price of uranium increases substantially. First, the extraction of uranium from seawater would make available 4.5 billion metric tons of uranium—a 60,000-year supply at present rates. Second, fuel-recycling fast-breeder reactors, which generate more fuel than they consume, would use less than 1 percent of the uranium needed for current LWRs. Breeder reactors could match today's nuclear output for 30,000 years using only the NEA-estimated supplies.

But hey, newly ramped up natural gas practices gives us 100 years of reserves... why worry about it now? Right?

Oh, where were we 100 years ago? Well, maybe we shouldn't limit ourselves to imagine where we'll be in a generation. (Unless you're an oil / gas company, maybe just wishful thinking you'll be relevant by the time new graduates retire) Personally, I'd rather be in industries that will only get better with time instead of hoping won't become like the dinosaurs that make the sweet juice we love so much.

good news. you can ignore mostly everything fox news says about the climate. so to those that watch fox news (you know who you are), time to get educated. start by reading many of the great posts in this thread!

An analysis by the Union of Concerned Scientists finds that 93 percent of climate info on Fox News prime time and 81 percent on the Wall Street Journal Opinion pages is misleading.

Knowledge and learning has failed you.

Science can settle on something being a reality, yet still be working out the how's and why's of it. You seem to prey on the fact that science doesn't have every answer as soon as a theory is presented, as though that in some way discredits it. Your ignorance is your demise.

Nope way of base with that one cale.

You seem to forget I am a bit of skeptic on the whole 'A" part of the AGW thing in general, not necessarily the GW part, and certainly not in science as a whole. As the agw thing has been politicized to death, and much of its funding has a somewhat questionable secondary agenda, thanks to it becoming a more of a political issue than a science issue.

Yeah yeah tin foil hat, blah blah denier, blah blah, just calling it as I see it is all

On a similar note, climate and weather science is beginning to prove that the Egyptian civilization is much older than we've been taught. Thousands or even tens of thousands older.
So get ready to burn all your history books.

The Christians already did all that about 1500 years ago in the Egyptian city of of Alexandria no less.

Problem is that this is the "shady" part of science that could prove all religions to be just a story or a poetic version of a historical event.
The question being what happens when/if something like that is publically announced as fact.
