    M42 Throttle Body Disassembly

For those of you that plan to fully disassemble your throttle bodies for painting, lubrication or other reasons here you go!

WARNING: Throttle body contains needle bearings, throttle shafts and soft throttle plates that can easily be damaged which could render your throttle inoperative or cause it to stick open during operation. Use caution, proceed at your own peril.

Imgur album link for pictures split in to two links, which are in the same order as the instructions below, images not embedded due to quantity.

    1. Remove throttle cable bracket (screws tend to stick, locking pliers may help get them started) and throttle position sensor.
    2. Drill or otherwise remove outer cover for lower (big plate) throttle shaft.
    3. Remove circlips from throttle shafts.
    4. Release spring tension from actuation side.
    5. Set zero throttle, mark position of throttle plates and remove throttle plate screws.
    6. Set throttle to full and slide throttle plates out.
    7. Slide throttle shafts out, remove springs, guides and washers. Attempt to keep them in order.
    8. Remove throttle stop.

***During painting or cleaning be sure to protect your throttle shaft bearings and tapped holes!!!

    1. Clean/lubricate bearings and bushings as desired.
    2. On lower plate, place lower guide bushing, spring, upper guide bushing, tension spring as shown, slide throttle shaft with washer in to place, place spring.
    3. On upper plate, place lower guide bushing, larger spring, tension and allow hook side to sit in throttle stop hole.
    4. Place upper guide bushing as shown (flat surface engages on lower armature bushing), smaller spring, move lower armature/final guide bushing in to place, slide throttle shaft with washer in to place.
    5. Install washers and circlips on opposite side to retain both throttle shafts. Be sure to cover lower throttle shaft hole in some way to replace drilled cover.
    6. Slide throttle plates in to place and install screws.
    7. Place springs in place on upper throttle assembly as shown.
    8. Reinstall throttle stop, throttle position sensor and throttle cable guide.

If you were careful your throttle works as it did before, its bearings are lubricated, and the throttle body itself looks immaculate!

The sacrifice of that old throttle body was not in vain. Glad you enjoyed it.
