He was a great American, and an outstanding example to us all, he will be missed.

Uh... Chuck Yeager is Mr. Sound Barrier (first to break the speed of sound). John Glenn was the first person to orbit the planet and also the oldest person to go into space.

It's debatable if a Bell X-1 with someone named Charles Yeager piloting first exceeded the speed of sound, or maybe someone named George Welch in an XP-86 did it first. Either way, it wasn't Glenn, and it doesn't really matter much for the purposes of this thread.

I do wonder when someone older than 77 will make it in to space.

The last of the "Right Stuff" is gone. He was the last of the Mercury Astronauts, perhaps we should call him Mr Rocket Man. A great man, so influential in aviation and space research. He was also a HUGE supporter of the SR-71 program. He was the chief supporter of bringing the SR-71 program out of retirement in the early 90s as well as the person who made the Coast to Coast Record flight of 972 happen after the AF brass heard they were going to go for several records.

Rest in Peace Mr Glen, you were an amazing man who truly had "The Right Stuff"

Definitely a sad day losing one of the last true American Heroes from that era. He was an inspiration to countless aviators, astronauts and scientists. RIP Senator.
