    Restore Door Handles

The powdercoating on my door handles is quite faded. I don't want to paint it black because it will quickly ware off with the amount the door handles are use. I am wondering if anyone has had any luck with any products that restore the finish? I am looking for something that lasts longer that just a wipe on silicone product.

    I was looking at Everbrite.

I sanded mine with fine grit paper (800?), painted them with etch primer, let them dry overnight then painted with trim paint. SEM and Duplicolor both make good ones.

That is what I am doing with the other trim bits, but I was afraid the paint wouldn't be durable enough on the handle. Have you had any issues with the paint wearing at all on the handle?

I haven't since I did them roughly four years ago, though the car is garage kept. I think if you take the time to prepare them properly, the top coat should last a long time.

How are you grabbing your handles? The only part of the handle you should be touching is the underside.

Very good point. I'm hoping to have time to do them this weekend. I'm using SEM self etching primer and their Trim Paint.

You could always get them re-powdercoated.

I just pulled mine off and lightly sanded them and painted them with satin black engine paint. It is very durable.

Are these handles hard to come off?

I painted mine probably four years ago and I daily drive my car.

Also, the handles come off extremely easily. Pull it up, remove two screws underneath.

Black shoe polish works well. It contains an actual dye, so it's not just a surface treatment, it dyes the faded plastic black. Has held up well since I used it on my E36's trim and handles last year.

The door handles are aluminum, for what it's worth.

Yah, had to replace mine (screws corroded into handles).
Got a used set from ebay and then repainted with Duplicolor Trim paint. Came out very very well.
