    I'm overdo for an update :-/ The car died while on a 20 mile test run. Somehow it made it my driveway where we needed to tow the last few hundred feet to the garage, lol. I initially thought the problem was the fuel pump - NOPE. Turns out one of the coil drives died, but the problems didn't end there. The car would run, but like crap and with a LOT of blowby. I purchased a compression tester and the results were not good :(

    Warm engine numbers:

    Cyl-Dry - Wet
    1 - 105 -150
    2 - 215 - 240
    3 - 185 - 210
    4 - 120 - 165
    5 - 210 - 235
    6 - 115 - 150

    I guess that explains the MASSIVE amounts of blowby :( And it's just been getting worse.

    So I picked up this:




    It's a wrecked 1992 325is 5 speed. Looks like I'm going M50NV! Stay tuned.

        I pulled the head today on the TU (bad motor). I don't get it - everything looks great. Cylinder #5 has surface rust where the piston doesn't ride so that's probably the one that had the valves open in storage, but that cylinder has good compression. There's no scoring from what I can see and the cross hatching is good. The worst looking cylinders are the *good* cylinders. WTF?

              Latest update... I've been tuning so it idles SMOOTHLY now, but on my last run I blew a brake line in the rear @ 70 mph. Always fun. I'm going to jack the car up tomorrow and see if it's a soft line or a hard line, then order the appropriate parts.

                It runs and stops! :D I've been driving it now and working out the bugs. It needs tuning work but my usb->adapter keeps dropping. I ordered a new interface that should be here any day. Right now the acceleration enrichment needs help, it could probably have the boost part of the map leaned out a tad, and it runs lean (17-18:1) at low loads. It also needs an electric fan, exhaust, and probably some sort of vent on the turbo side; the hood gets very hot after the car sits.



                Few things:
                -that wire is my very ghetto antenna
                -I eased through first and the beginning of second, then rolled into the throttle.
                -All the crap on the dash is from me cleaning the car. I'll get that taken care of soon
                -The tune needs work. It's running rich in boost so it's safe to boost, but the accel enrichment causes that lean stumble when I shift. If I shift slow, it's fine and if I shift quickly it's fine. In between... stumble. I'll get it fixed as soon as that bluetooth adapter comes in.
                -it's a cell phone video. Better videos will come soon.

                  Updates... heater core developed a leak over a month ago, I went to Japan, had fun, came back to the States, and haven't touched the car since other than to start it. Prior to the heater core it was running well enough to drive around town and I put several hundred miles on it. Now it looks like I'll be replacing this e30 with my friend's (1MZ on these forums) '91 318i 24v project which has a new motor, rust free chassis, and good interior. The turbo parts will be swapped over and this car will be sold as a running 24v swapped beater. I have a friend who is currently interested in buying it, but it will be for sale if he drops out. Price is up in the air because I don't even know how to begin pricing this thing.

                      thanks. I pulled the motor out in an actual garage complete with air tools.

                          Update: the '91 still needs to be towed home and I bypassed the heater core on the '85. The '85 is now back to running very well - I have a few minor issues to work out still but overall it's pretty driveable. When I move to the '91, I need to make a new wiring harness with dedicated sensor grounds because I have some seriously noisy inputs :( I'm surprised it runs as well it does given the way my logs look...

                            I just went for a 30+ mile drive this evening after a long drive over the weekend. I fixed the jerky throttle by retarding the timing map in the low load areas and have been fine tuning the VE table. Overall, the e30's running damn well; it even started in the cold evening without a problem (need to keep my foot on the gas for warm up, but that's to be expected without an ICV). The last real tuning bug to iron out will require some wiring adjustments; my MS & sensors are all grounded through the same wire so the sensor inputs are seriously noisy. It's bad enough that I'll get some AE when cruising which causes the car to occasionally jerk.

                            Oh, and the '91 will tentatively arrive around November 3rd.

                            Quick 3rd-5th pull from last night. The speed at the end was 90 mph (5th @ 3500 rpms), 3rd gear started at about 32 mph with 8 secs elapsed. 60-80 (4th) was 2.25 seconds. The chassis is too loose right now for me to run it any harder. Oh, and I'm not going to show my coolant or MAT sensor logs - they're embarrassing from the noise, but that's why the injector duty looks noisy.

                              Look what showed up:









                              Everything is there, but some assembly is required. The engine wasn't running when I got it, but she fired up this afternoon. At this point, I need to order small odds and ends (mostly seals & hoses), pull it apart, reroute some wiring, then put everything back together and get her on the road.

                                Finally a better video of the '85. I didn't get on it too hard for two reasons - A) it turns out it's kind of hard to drive with a camera in your hand and B) I forgot the acceleration enrichment was disabled from an earlier tuning run. I'll redo it eventually.
