1991, only year for the is.
Yes they are going up in price. Great car.
This would be kind of a starter car for him so having to do some work on the car is ok

There's been a red one off and on CL for the last year or so. Minor damage to the hood and right fender. Looks decent though and has euroweaves. I remember it being around $3k or so. Haven't seen it for a couple weeks, but I'm sure it'll come back on.
My buddy Ryan and I were looking for a 318is for a while, but people started asking stupid money for Salvage title POS's. So we instead just bought a pair of nice '91 318i sedans.
If you are just looking for a 318is to have one, then look for the best you can afford. If you just want to experience it, get a 318i. Chances are for that budget, he is going to have to do suspension anyways, and really - that's the biggest difference between the models.
I bought my 318is for 1800? Last april. Honestly it's a fun car to drive but it's lacking any and all balls. My conclusion after a year of driving it is that m42s suck. Anyone comparing a 318is to an m3 has never been in an m3. These m42 cars will keep up with m20s, and outhandle them in corners. However, plenty of m20 cars have had their ego knocked by mini vans
